WHO South-East Asia: Action to Save Lives and Promote Health

 

Communicable Diseases

*     Surveillance, outbreak alert and response to communicable diseases

*     Prevention and control of priority communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

*     Eradication of diseases such as Polio, Leprosy, Kala-azar and Yaws

*     Strengthening of national capacities for emergency preparedness and quick response to emergencies

 

Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health

*     Prevention and control of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes

*     Strengthening of community mental health services and increasing awareness against substance abuse

*     Integrating all public health interventions for both communicable and non-communicable diseases

*     Build capacity to formulate and enforce tobacco control measures and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)

 

Family and Community Health

*     Introduce and support institutional implementation of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) strategy and expand its coverage. Promote adolescent health through multisectoral coordination to improve access and provide adolescent-friendly health services

*     Improve nutritional status and develop human resources to manage malnutrition

*     Develop and implement national strategies to ensure universal skilled care at birth

*     Prevent unsafe abortion. Support activities related to Family Planning, Reproductive Tract Infection and Sexually Transmitted Infections

*     Ensure vaccination coverage, strengthen polio surveillance, ensure vaccine quality and promote research for more effective outbreak response

 

Sustainable Development and Healthy Environments

*     Control water quality surveillance, introduce water safety plans and improve sanitation coverage through advocacy and sharing best practices

*     Develop policies and plans for improving workers’ health

*     Increase awareness on the health impacts of global climate change and prepare the health sector to respond to the changes

*     Promote health and human rights

 

Health Systems Development

*     Strengthen public health policies and practices

*     Improve the Health Information System (HISW) through a regional strategy

*     Ensure the rational use of medicine; implement the concept of essential medicines

*     Develop human resources (categories and skills) for health care delivery and management

*     Build capacity for knowledge management, improving access to and sharing of information and evidence across the region
