With an aim to advocate the deployment of
public health/community health nurses or midwives at the community or primary
care level to promote health of all people in the community, the Regional
Meeting on Strengthening Deployment of Public Health Nurses in Support of
Millennium Development Goals was held between 22-24
February 2011 in Bangkok,
Thailand. The
meeting was attended by 52 participants.
In the meeting the situation of deployment of
public health/community health nurses in countries of South-East
Asia was reviewed and issues and challenges were identified.
Countries experiences and the field visits demonstrated the role that nursing
and midwifery workforce in community could play in support of MDGs especially MDG 4-5-6. The ‘Regional strategic
framework for strengthening deployment of public health/community health
nurses in support of MDGs’ has been adopted. Key components for strengthening deployment
include 1) policy, strategies and plan; 2)
role and functions; 3) education and training; 4) supportive systems for
enabling environment from professional organizations, local government,
community and other sectors and 5) evidences and research are key components
in strengthening the deployment.
