The Medical
Councils play an important role in the development of medical profession
of a country. Realizing the need to strengthen the Medical Councils of
the Region to meet the challenges of the 21st century, WHO SEARO
organized a Regional Consultation of Medical Councils in countries of the
Region, from 17-19 October 2006 in Thimpu, Bhutan.
This consultation was attended by representatives of Bhutan, India,
Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar,
Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The three-day
consultation provided an opportunity for the representatives to realize
the roles and responsibilities of the Medical Councils in their
respective countries with other Medical Councils of the SEA Region, and
to examine them against some of the best practices of Medical Councils
drawn from several other countries.
The consultation ended with several recommendations
which were pioneering in nature. One of the important recommendations was
the need to develop a Regional Network of Medical Councils with a view to
support and strengthen the Medical Councils of the Region to carry out
their mandates effectively and efficiently. The representatives who
attended the consultation were of unanimous view that this may be
achieved through setting up a SEA Regional Network of Medical Councils to
enhance networking, sharing of information and organizing periodic
meetings on important topics. The Network of Medical Councils of South
East Asia Member countries was established on
16th February 2007 as a follow up to this meeting.
