As of 26 September 2005, a total of 4255
cases of suspect Japanese Encephalitis (JE) have been reported from Uttar
Pradesh, India since the outbreak started in July, with 914 deaths (case
fatality rate of 22%) of this total 280 cases and 68 deaths (CFR 24%) are
from the adjoining state of Bihar.
The Government has intensified vector control
measures (both antilarval and anti adult) and
distributed 200,000 mosquito nets. A plan for immunizing children between the
ages of 1-12 years is being drawn up for the next year.
WHO continues to closely monitor the situation
and is providing technical and logistic support especially in the area of
vaccines, supply of diagnostic reagents and on vector control measures.
In Nepal, as of 21 September 2005 a total
of 1802 suspect JE cases have been reported of which 283 have died (CFR:
16%). Of these, 1559 cases and 247 deaths have occurred in the western,
mid-western and far-western regions of Nepal. WHO is working closely with the
national authorities and providing technical support.
