The WHO Conference “Partners for Health in South-East
Asia”, held in New Delhi, India (March 16 – 18, 2011) sought to strengthen
regional collaboration for health, and encourage effective and sustainable
partnerships between various stakeholders. The Conference provided a platform
for WHO and its partners from the 11 Member States of the South-East Asia
Region (Bangladesh, Bhutan, DPR Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar,
Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste) to engage in wide-ranging
discussions on the health priorities for the Region, which accounts for 26%
of the world’s population and bears a disproportionately high percentage
(40%) of the global disease burden.
The Conference also provided an opportunity to Member States and partners to share best
practices and lessons learnt, and highlighted the importance of research and
innovation, as well as partnerships in action. All sessions were based on the
principles of dialogue, exchange and active participation to identify
challenges and opportunities for advancing health priorities in the
South-East Asia Region.
In addition to high-level participation from the 11 Member
States of the Region (including Ministers from the Member States), over 350
high level representatives participated from donor countries, multilateral
and intergovernmental organizations, civil society, foundations, corporations
as well as research/academic institutions.
The Conference culminated in declarations of commitment by
various partners leading to the adoption of the “Delhi
Call for Action on Partnerships for Health in South-East Asia, 2011”. Read
